The New Pornographers certainly know how to make some of the most catchy and colorful pop music around. The 2007 release of Challengers is their latest collection of the work, and some of their best at that. The album’s lyrics and sound are equally brilliant with both bouncy Beach Boys-esque pop ballads and slower folksy pieces heavy in texture and words. The only real complaint I’ve heard in regards to Challengers is that as a whole, it’s a little to soft and slow. But you’ve got to give them credit for experimenting with their sound and songs like “My Right Versus Yours” and “All The Things That Go To Make Heaven And Earth” provide enough energy for nearly any album. Plus, any album that somehow can incorporate Michael McDonald must be good.
