Every once in a while I’ll hear about a band and I’ll give a listen only to pass a quick judgment on the first five seconds of music. Sadly, I did this to Detroit natives, The Silent Years. I quickly regretted this huge mistake when I involuntarily gave a second listen on Last.fm. With my toes tapping and my head bobbing, I found myself thinking, “I have to know who this is!” Needless to say, my foot was quickly inserted into my mouth as soon as I gave a glance at my widget. So of course, I downloaded the group’s latest release, The Globe, and gave a 
good listen.
Thirty seconds into the first track, I was already hooked. The Silent Years offers your typical, catchy indie keyboard tracks and drum beats, but in a new way that almost redefines its genre. Interesting lyrics and upbeat guitars, as well as violins, keep you interested in them one track after another, and constantly wanting more. And with twelve lengthy tracks on its sophomore release alone, they can definitely feed your need for good tunes.
The Silent Years definitely deserve a first (and second) listen from all. They bring something new with every track and make great use of diversity in its music. With mellow tracks like “Open Up Our Eyes” that can calm you to sleep and heavier ones such as “Worlds Worst Birthday Gift” that can wake you in an instant, it’s hard to not find something you like in this band. Be sure to give them a listen and to save your judgment past the first five seconds!
