It’s no secret we at CoS are a bunch of Bruce Springsteen apologists. The man can simply do nothing wrong in our eyes. So when The Boss and his E Street Bandmates took the stage to provide the halftime entertainment for Super Bowl XLIII last night, it’s no surprise we were secretly hoping the game officials would cancel the second half of the game and let the true show go on.
For those who missed the band’s 12 minutes performance, whether because your head was in a daze from those 3D commercials or you found yourself in the bathroom after eating too much chili – let’s recap.
The show begins with a silhouette of Bruce and Clarence Clemons before giving way to a miraculous, fire work spewing stage and the E Street, or should I say, the house-rocking, pants-dropping, brain-shocking, earth-quaking, booty-shaking, Viagra-taking, lovemaking, sexifying, electrifying legendary E Street Band!”
Springsteen kicks things off with a classic introduction that showcases both his preacher-like energy and onstage persona. “For the next 12 minutes, we’re going to bring the righteous and mighty power of the E Street Band into your beautiful home. I want you to step back from the guacamole dip…I want you to put the chicken fingers down…And turn your television all the way up!” Bruce proclaims before literally jumping onto to Roy Bittan’s piano. “And what I want to know is…is there anybody alive out there? Is there anybody alive out there?”
And from that point on, well words can’t really describe what transpired next. Sure, the performance was shaped for television and verses were cut out. One could even argue Bruce’s stage slide and resulting crotch collision was perhaps the most memorable part of the 12-minute performance. But when the shouts of Bruce yelling “1, 2, 3” resonated from the speakers, before the band segued into a glorious rendition of “Born to Run” it was hard not to get a few tingles. And I’d assume I’m not the only one who felt that way.
Let’s just hope that all those other people won’t be online at the same time when tickets for his upcoming world tour officially go on sale.
