Wilco plans “creative” June release

Since this is Wilco we’re talking about, we’ll cut the intro and get right into the details. After all, you could probably care less about any clever opening when details of the band’s much anticipated seventh studio album are of topic…

According to a newsletter sent to fans late last night (via NME), the Chicago outfit is currently “hunkered down in the loft with Jim Scott and are just about ready to start mixing” the yet-to-be-titled followup to 2007’s Sky Blue Sky in June. If all goes as planned, the album will be released in June. All specifics, including a title and exact release date, will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

We also know, courtesy of Rolling Stone‘s Austin Skaggs, who visited Wilco and Wilco’s loft on Tuesday, that the album wll be a “blast of creativity,” or as Skaggs went on to elaborate, really, really stellar…

Let’s just say the record is sick! When we heard Wilco debut the song “One Wing” at Lollapalooza last year, we predicted that the band was consciously moving in a more experimental direction (a la Yankee Hotel Foxtrot), but the songs we heard at the Loft take Wilco in yet another new direction. Great melodies, great lyrics, great playing and great sounds. You’re gonna dig it!

No real surprise there. We’ve been raving about “One Wing” since we first took it in live at Grant Park. Need a refresher?

If a June release does come to fruition, then the album will drop right smack in the middle of Wilco’s recently announced summer tour. And we haven’t even mentioned the new DVD. Seriously, could live get any better???
