With all the Phish hoopla going on these days, it’s easy to forget that the band’s legendary frontman has also been spending his recent time on an orchestral composition titled Time Turns Elastic. Perhaps privy of this, Trey Anastasio has announced plans to release the piece on May 12th via Rubber Jungle Records.

Composed by Anastasio and Don Hart, who is currently the Composer-in-Residence for Orchestra Nashville and first collaborated with the Phish frontman back in 2004 during his appearance at Bonnaroo, Time Turns Elastic features three movements that are said to blend the “intrinsic elegance of classical music with searing blues-rock guitar, resulting in an exhilarating work that engages and challenges fans of both genres.” The piece was orchestrated by Hart and performed by Anastasio and the David Sabee-conducted Northwest Sinfonia.

Ahead of its release, Time Turns Elastic will receive its East Coast premiere on May 21st when Anastasio joins Music Director Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at Baltimore’s Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. The selection will also be performed by Phish on its upcoming U.S. tour, where the band will “interpret the piece as an epic rock song.”
