And the seventh Wilco album is called…

Wilco (The Album). Wait, wait, wait. Before we continue, shake off all that criticism (“Self-titled? Bah humbug!”) and just focus for a minute. Sure, self-titled records should be saved for debuts or, well, never, but if you think about it, there’s something rather tongue-in-cheek going on here. Just take a gander at the opening track, “Wilco, The Song”, and it’s all somewhat humorous — especially the addition of, (The Album). See? Wilco‘s still clever than ever.

As we reported on Sunday, the new record will sport eleven tracks, one of which features Feist, and while only two songs have slipped out (the aforementioned titular track and “One Wing”), Rolling Stone‘s recent preview should stir some excitement:

“One Wing” and “Sunny Feeling” are breezy, pop-friendly tunes; “Deeper Down” is a mellow ballad spiked with atmospherics and chamber strings; the nearly-six-minute jam “Bull Black Nova” starts with rollicking drums, stacatto keys and guitars before exploding into a killer solo from guitarist Nels Cline. Think of it as a sonic follow-up to the kraut-rockin’ “Spiders (Kidsmoke).” “That one’s a really intense, powerful song,” says Kotche of “Nova.” “It’s got a static groove that’s really insistent. There’s a lot of great guitar moments on that song.”

Well, if Glenn Kotche says it’s great, then it’s gotta be great. Still, with no album release date set, fans have got to be going nuts in anticipation. Just remember, June is right around the corner, folks. In the meantime, however, be sure to pick up the new DVD, Ashes of American Flags, which you can preview below.
