He founded the Top 40 franchise. He’s presented the hits for decades. Millions of people know his voice, even if they can’t place the name. When it boils down to it, Casey Kasem is to radio what Johnny Carson was to late night — a warm and welcoming voice. Now it seems, on July 4th, 39 years after he hit the airwaves, Kasem will debut his final broadcast.

How choice that Kasem will bow out when we’re lighting fireworks and downing some of our American brewery’s best. Come to think of it, the radio legend will be celebrating his own independence, as well. Popular music never sleeps and one can only imagine the fresh air Kasem’s planning to take in. But, who fills in his shoes now? According to Idolator, the “ever popular” Ryan Seacrest. Though don’t get your panties in a twist just yet, Kasem will be influencing the production side of things with Premiere Radio Networks, which syndicates the American Top series. So, he’s not too far away.

Many have doubts towards the American Idol icon, and rightfully so, but things change and we’ll have to roll with the punches. For now, we’ll leave you with some famous words by the host himself: “Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.”
