If the release of the “Too Many Rappers” hadn’t come just hours after the Beastie Boys’ MCA announced that he had cancer and the legendary hip-hop group would be delaying the release of its upcoming album and scrapping tour dates because of it, we’d probably come up with some over-the-top pun referencing this line of the song: “I been in the game since before you was born / I might still be MC-ing after you’re gone.”
But then, all that shit went down, and as Stereogum so wisely points out, the aforementioned line now conveys a deeper connotation. So, rather than diss what sounds to be a way too cheesy song created by a hip-hop group finally starting to feel its age, let’s instead celebrate… and hope there are many more Beastie’s songs to come.
