If there is any guess as to why The Flaming Lips decided to call their new album Embryonic, it may have to due with the band’s decision to reach out musically and draw from influences ranging from Joy Division to John Lennon. At least that’s the sense we got after the band debuted two of the album’s songs, “Convinced Of The Hex” and “Silver Trembling Hands”, at the Pitchfork Music Festival last weekend.

The first track, “Convinced Of The Hex”, is what you’d expect from a Flaming Lips song: It’s a mishmash of sounds thrown together that generates a hectic, chaotic tempo. But by God if it doesn’t work to ultimately have an appeal to both older and post-At War with the Mystics fans! Through the chaos, Coyne sings with a feel and tone and sheer coolness of some kind of Latin American lounge act.

“Silver Trembling Hands” is much more grand and spacey in its arc and structure. There is less energy bouncing around and it feels streamlined compared to the first track. However, that’s not to say it isn’t full of the Lips trademark eccentricities. There is a definite kind of thump and movement to the piece, maybe it’s the pulsating guitar line throughout. All in all it’s something less quirky and more of a laid back savagery.

Covert Curiosity is offering streams of both tracks. We’re offering an up-to-date list of tour dates below. When combined, the excitement is exhilarating.
