Hiatus no more… Os Mutantes going all out with new album, tour

The Tropicalia pioneers, Os Mutantes, or The Mutants for non-Portuguese speakers, are out in the spotlight after a very long hiatus. Originally formed in the 1960’s (how many of you, loyal readers, were alive back then?) the band took a very long break in 1976 following a decade of success. Their fans included such luminaries as David Byrne and Beck; Kurt Cobain even asked that they get back together and tour with him in 1993. But it was not until some tour dates in 2006 and 2007, including a supporting gig for The Flaming Lips at the Hollywood Bowl and playing the Pitchfork Festival in 2006, that Os Muntates returned. And as we know know, their activity has carried on from there.

The band has announced plans for its first new album in over 30 years. Titled Haih and due for release on September 8th via ANTI- Records, the record will feature founding member Sergio Dias accompanied by Tom Zé and Jorge Ben and promises to continue the band’s psychedelic tradition. Check out the album’s first single, “Teclar”, below (via Pitchfork).

What’s more, to celebrate the release, Dias and Co. will go on an extensive road trip, one which kick off on August 28th in Los Angeles, includes stops at Outside Lands Festival and Bumbershoot, and concludes on October 18th in Austin. Tickets will go on sale beginning Friday, July 31st via Ticketmaster.com.
