Why is it that anything The Mars Volta touches turns into something so bizarre there’s often not enough words to describe it? Perhaps it’s their extremely progressive rock music, or maybe it’s the band’s insistence on 20 minute jam sessions seamlessly followed by hypnotic visuals of ultimate strangeness? Who knows, but whatever it is always draws the audience deeper and deeper into the crazy, mixed-up mindset of these Mexican rockers. And with the bulging satchel of experimental rock tunes currently slung over their backs, it’s about time Mars Volta put out a new video for their latest single, “Since We’ve Been Wrong”.

The tune was pulled from the group’s brand new record, Octahedron, but strangely enough “Since We’ve Been Wrong” had already showcased two years back during one of their live performances. You see, originally the song was recorded for The Mars Volta’s 2008 effort, The Bedlam in Goliath, but once again the band felt the song just didn’t “fit with the rest of the album”. Seriously, how many times have we heard that before?

Shot through a fisheye lens, the video starts out simple as spliced images of the band rehearsing fade in and out. But as the slow, eerie melody slowly approaches its climax, the image gets bigger and bigger, until it takes up the whole screen right around the drum solo. Then, after the music fades completely, the Lopez brothers pop up and begin bowing and mouthing “Thank You”. If you’re expecting another, “L’Via L’Viaquez”, guess again, “Since We’ve Been Wrong” is an extremely simplistic and quite mellow video, but don’t let that deter you from watching it.
