As the story goes, Mark Ruffalo, that dude from Collateral and Zodiac, was listening to music one night. He eventually slipped into what is described as “a flu-induced fever dream.” During this dream, the sounds of The Besnard Lakes’ song “Because Tonight” filled his headphones and gave him a “welcomed chill.” Says Ruffalo, “It was a perfect piece of music. It has longing and hope and melancholy; a love story gone well and then badly and then lived out…I could see whole films in their songs.”
Once he woke up, the actor set out to find the husband and wife duo of Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas and ask them to score his new film and directorial debut, Sympathy for Delicious.
Apparently intrigued by the concept (the stars both Ruffalo and Orlando Bloom and follows a paralyzed DJ named Delicious’s attempts at healing), The Besard Lakes agreed and what they came up with… well, let’s have Ruffalo explain:
“Sympathy For Delicious is a Magic and Agnostic Rock and Roll Revival, and I wanted a score to the film that felt questioning and cinematic. The Besnard Lakes is a perfect match to what we have been trying to achieve with the movie; something rough and not overproduced, not devoid of guts, full of humanity and messy around the edges. Their music is not just a clutch of songs but a cinematic experience that evolves dramatically and carries poetry in the tidy complexity of it’s parts. I am very proud to have them. They bring a living, breathing and vibrant quality to the existing story that is rare to find in film scores.”
According to IMDB, Sympathy For Delicious is due for release something this year — though they better hurry up as the year is almost over! Also watch out for The Besnard Lakes’ proper followup to the Polaris Prize-nominated The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse, which is due for release in early 2010.
