In the grand scheme of things, without a doubt 2009 has brought a cyclone of new bands to the forefront. One of these enigmatic, yet powerful groups, Austin, Texas’ own Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, has made their way around the office as a perennial staff favorite. Taking the reigns of their forefathers such as Otis Redding & James Brown, Lewis and the gang have made 2009 an excellent breakout year by tearing up the United States with their own infused blend of garage rock savvy rawness with the sexual energy of classic soul. With the 
release of their debut record Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is!, these include sizzling performances at this year’s South By Southwest, Chicago’s very own Folk & Roots Festival, Lollapalooza and most recently Outside Lands out in San Francisco.
If you haven’t heard of these guys by now, drop everything at once. Don’t even flinch twice. Just do it. These guys are worth the focus. With their Blues Brothers-inspired, Texas blood on the track live show in the back pockets, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears are one of those bands that come around once in a while that prove they can be heavier than their rock band counterparts. Armed with a busted up telecaster, Lewis leads his raucous soul brothers into battle with a crispy influx of harmony that the late and great Marvin Gaye could weep for. Soul is as heavy too and the Honeybears belt a smasher out of the park.
