Check Out: Spoon’s “Written In Reverse”

Before we all shut down for turkey and stuffing last week, we reported about Spoon shifting up their album release for next year’s Transference. What we also said was how they’d be issuing a single come December. Well, believe it or not, but we’re here in the year’s last month and naturally… we’re with a new Spoon single, too.

“Written In Reverse” relies heavily on the piano and its thudding, nearly ominous drumbeat. It’s a little erratic, too. When Britt Daniel croons, “When you lose a bit of yourself,” it’s sort of jangly, as if he’s jogging with the lyrics some, call it a stream of consciousness, if you will. Anyhow, it’s definitely not your typical Spoon tune, but considering the band’s hitting their seventh LP, we’re not only okay with that, we’re welcoming the idea with open arms. Two songs down and we couldn’t be happier with the product thus far.

Tomorrow, the song will be available for a digital download, but if you’re unsure about spending the .99 cents, NPR is streaming it for free via All Songs Considered. As for the record itself, Transference hits shelves on January 19th in the US and on the 18th for the UK and surrounding areas.

Though if you’re feeling rather spry lately, hit up some dates.
