Matador Records and True Panther Sounds: Love at First Sight

It is as if all the years of awkward teenage flirting and courtship prepared us well. I mean, we all saw this coming. Matador Records and True Panther Sounds, after a year of trying to make the public believe they were just friends, are now joined in label bliss. For any music lover, this is a match made in heaven.

As Matablog reports, Matador Records has officially purchased True Panther Sounds (though TPS founder  Dean Bien will remain be on board handling all of the label’s daily duties). The courtship got particularly hot and heavy when the Girls debut LP, Album, was released in partnership between Matador and True Panther back in September. Then it was True Panther artist Hunx & His Punx supporting Matador’s Jay Reatard on his recent tour. Hell, they even had a showcase together at CMJ 2009!

Now True Panther is owned by Matador, providing the likes of Tanlines, Glasser, Lemonade, and Ty Seagall to the label’s already mighty arsenal.

Of course, the move only caps off what has already been one hell of a year for Matador — beautiful albums from Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Mission of Burma, Girls, Cold Cave, Kurt Vile, the debut of Julian Plenti, Pavement reuniting, Fucked up and The Chemistry of Common Life winning the Polaris award, the signing of Ted Leo, et al. Well done Matador, well done.
