CNN goes indie with new online media endeavors

Suddenly, Vampire Weekend hits the top of the Billboard charts and the world of indie music is ripe for the plundering. Case in point, CNN has hitched its corporate train on the indie bandwagon with partnerships with Vice and indie super label Sub Pop.

The deal, according to Mashable.com, will create two web-exclusives for the news magnate. Vice will offer “VBS.TV on CNN.com”, while Sub Pop’s contributions will involve the documentary “Indie Asia: On Tour with Handsome Furs.”

For those unfamiliar with VBS.TV, it’s the video extension of the Vice empire, which also features the magazine and a record label. Anyhow, their first contribution from VBS.TV, which went live on January 20th, is entitled “The Vice Guide to Liberia” and features Vice founder Shane Smith trekking through the country interviewing warlords throughout the war-torn country. Check out the teaser trailer below.

As for Sub Pop, while you won’t get much tales of the drinking of children’s blood, you will get a documentary that follows the Handsome Furs on a tour throughout Asia. In what’s sure to be a synergy of publicity, the feature goes live on CNN’s Travel section on January 21st. Again, enjoy a small taste here.

We’ll keep you updated regarding the future of the programming deal and any other programs of interest.
