New band featuring members of Born Ruffians, Tokyo Police Club, others announce “novel” EP

If 2009 was all about the supergroups, then 2010 will have to be about how these gargantuans of music will set themselves apart from the competition. If you’re Toronto’s NOVELS, you make an EP in a day.

As So Much Silence notes, the band is led by Born Ruffians singer/guitarist Luke Lalonde and includes Graham Wright (Tokyo Police Club), Will Currie (Will Currie & the Country French), Dean Marino (Ex~Po), and Jason Sadlowski. The group spent a cold January 2009 day and pounded out the five songs much like any other band might do. But now that said EP is complete, the band is taking a novel approach to distribution, according to their official site.

“In January of 2009, five of us locked ourselves away in Chemical Sound Studios in Toronto with the goal of writing, arranging, and recording an EP from scratch in one marathon session. When we stumbled out the door in the wee hours of the next morning, we found ourselves with what we’re now calling NOVELS.

NOVELS won’t be sold in CD stores, on the internet, or anywhere else. Instead, we’ll give them away, or put them places. Maybe you’ll find a copy sitting on a park bench. Maybe a masked man will hand you one as he passes you on the street. Maybe none of these things will happen. But we’ll make sure that everyone gets a chance to listen if they want to.”

The band’s also encouraging you to burn your own copies and haphazardly distribute them amongst friends, family, and various strangers. You can download the entire EP here. Plus, enjoy a making of video here and some photos of what was surely a wacky and inspired night here.  Enjoy a sample of the project below.

A crisp $10 bill to the person who hides it the weirdest place (offer not actually valid).
