I think it’s safe to say that Vampire Weekend is no longer indie’s best kept secret. As officially announced today, the New York outfit’s recently released sophomore studio effort, Contra , debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 124,000 copies sold. According to Billboard , the set is only the 12th independently distributed album to top the Billboard 200 chart since Nielsen SoundScan began overseeing the list in May of 1991. Celebration!
In case you were wondering, Vampire Weekend’s 2008 self-titled debut sold just over 28,000 copies in its debut week before peaking at #17 and selling 498,000 total copies.
