A little over a year ago, the Andy Samberg-led, Saturday Night Live comedy/musical troupe The Lonely Island celebrated the release of its much celebrated debut, Incredibad. There were tons of reasons to like it, but perhaps the biggest highlight was the appearance of a healthy list of musical heavyweights collaborating on songs featuring absurd titles like “Dick in the Box”, “I’m in a Boat”, and “Lazy Sunday”.
The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas was one such heavyweight, collaborating on the track “Boombox”. Last night, The Strokes frontman made an unexpected appearance on late night television to finally give the song its so deserved music video, and, not surprising, the result was as absurd as only one could dream for. Donning futuristic leather outfits, Samberg and Casablancas hold true to the songs lyrics, as the duo makes their way through country clubs, city streets, and an old folk’s home with a boombox — you can guess what happens next. Then again (SPOILER ALERT), I had no idea Casablancas would by singing in glitter and smashing flower vases by the time the two-and-a-half minute clip was all said and done. So, enjoy.
P.S. We didn’t forget about Pearl Jam’s musical performance on last night’s SNL. That’s coming soon.
