Straight from Newport Beach, California, Young the Giant‘s infectious sound is a disease you want to catch. The symptoms? Upbeat nature, sing-along hook, line, and sinker choruses, and a tremendously smooth California sound. You got to love ’em.
Young the Giant has it all. With their ongoing and recent national tour with Minus the Bear, it’s safe to say this band is a bottle rocket ready to explode — at least if we’re to judge the band’s recent foray into Fort Lauderdale, where they set the tone of the show in a way that can’t be described. Both lead singer Sameer Gadhia and guitarist Eric Cannataor wailed effortlessly about the stage, grooving off a wall of serene sound created by Payam Doostzadeh, Jacob Tilley, and Francois Comtois. While it’s arguable whether or not it was the night’s best performance, no one would deny the band’s authentic and out of control energy.
To be honest, being at the show and seeing the reaction from the South Florida-rich crowd, the answer was, in fact, inarguable. They stole the show. Maybe it’s that different sound from a different coast that gets to me (and the rest of South Florida), or maybe it was simply the stage presence. Either way, it’s a breath of fresh air to see a band perform at such a high level, giving a veteran band such as Minus the Bear a run for their fan base.
As of right now, the band is working on their first full length album with Grammy Award-winning producer Joe Chiccarelli, known famously for his work with the The White Stripes, The Shins, Radiohead, and The Strokes forthcoming album. Chiccarelli’s history with the best in today’s garage rock should prove fruitful for Young the Giant. We’ll see when the effort surfaces on Roadrunner Records later this year. Until then, keep your eyes open and your ears up because this band has more coming your way.
