Indie super group alert! Meet Cologne Tape, a brand new electronic collective featuring Axel Willner (aka the Swedish mastermind behind The Field), John Stanier (aka the drummer of Battles), and Jens-Uwe Beyer (aka Popnoname), along with German musicians Ada, John Harten, Daniel Ansorge, and Philipp Janzen.

According to Resident Advisor, Cologne Tape will digitally release its debut EP, Render, on June 14th via Magazine. The release will be limited to 300 vinyl copies and 1000 downloads, the latter of which doesn’t really mean anything in the age of the Internet, but you still have to give props for the unique idea. A full-length effort will follow next year.

In an interview with Resident Advisor, Ansorge explained how the group came together:

“The whole thing happened almost by itself. There were these people with different musical backgrounds hanging together, realising that they were listening to the same music which resulted in making music together. We think it has something to do with the place (Cologne) and time (2010). Quite a few people have left Cologne for Berlin in the last decade. Which resulted in the scenes getting smaller and smaller. So it happend that we of Cologne Tape who had always stayed, had moved here or were visiting for more than just a day realised we had the same love for the musical tradition of the city. Or should one say we got stuck together due to this same feeling?”

In other news, Stanier and the rest of his Battles bandmates are gearing up for the release of their sophomore full-length, which is set to drop sometime this year. Willner is also gearing up for a new release, this time under the moniker Loops of Your Heart.
