There’s only so many ways that we can say that Fucked Up like to stay busy. But on top of touring and finally getting that Twitter account, did you know the hardcore Canadian outfit also took time to reinvent pop music history? Let us explain. Last week, Katrina and the Waves‘ smash hit “Walking on Sunshine” turned 25. So, in celebration, BrooklynVegan and Primary Wave Music put together Sun Salute, a tribute of the band and their eponymous hit. Along with tracks from Sam Amidon and Deer Tick, plus others to be revealed, Fucked Up combined the feel good hit with its own “Crooked Head”; the resulting track is the not-so-feel-good banger “Crooked Sunshine”.
The track is a more lighthearted than you’d imagine; for the first 30 seconds or so. If the original’s saccharine sweet delivery bugged you slightly, then the band’s combo of demonic wailing and evil choir, coupled with a crashing drumline and even some horn work, should have you screaming for the New Wavers’ rendition. But don’t take our word for it; ruin your childhood, in the best way possible, for yourself.
Not enough Fucked Up For you? Enjoy the video for the full “Crooked Head” song below. And we threw in the original to boot. Plus, catch the band at a few festival gigs this summer.
