Hear new Mastodon song from Jonah Hex

Peter Gabriel is to the 1984 Matthew Modine flick Birdy as Mastodon is to the 2010 cinematizing of DC comic Jonah Hex. How about that, huh? Our stalwart and intelligent metal pals in Mastodon have crafted the score to Jimmy Hayward’s Jonah Hex and thanks to Stereogum we get the first taste of the soundtrack today.

“Indian Theme” is assaulting, energetic and easily placeable in the movie (which, unfortunately, I’m a little deterred from thanks to this review). Noise Creep reports the band wrote the music while watching footage from the movie and composed the tracks spontaneously in the studio, which is about as “jam band” as you’re gonna get with metal. The Revenge Gets Ugly EP will be available via iTunes June 29th.

You can check out the track over at Stereogum’s website here, and don’t forget Mastodon heads out on tour with Deftones and Alice In Chains this fall on the BlackDiamondSkye tour.
