While Jimmy Page mentioned last December that he was working on new material, he has remained secretive about what exactly this project would be — up until now. While he didn’t exactly bear his soul, he did let a few more tidbits slip to BBC 6 Music last week.
At Mojo Magazine‘s award ceremony in London, where he was inducted into the Mojo Hall Of Fame, the former Led Zeppelin guitarist revealed that the new music isn’t just for a single project, but a number of different ones.
“I’m just looking forward to making some music and surprising people with it,” he said. “It won’t be just teaming up with lots of people who are [big] names. I’ve got an idea of something which I’ve had for a long time and now’s the time to do it.”
That said, if you’re expecting something like Led Zeppelin, you may be disappointed. Page also noted the new material would be a change in direction from his previous offerings. On the plus side, we’ll get to see what the guitarist has been working on sometime later this year.
“I have got other ideas that have been nagging at me for a long long time, I think the way to present music is same picture, different frame; and sometimes this frame is quite radical.” he said.
Meanwhile, Page’s former bandmate recently detailed the specifics of what he’s up to these days. As previously reported, Robert Plant will be spending the summer touring with his new band, Band of Joy. What’s more, as TwentyFourBit points out, the outfit will also release the 12-track Band of Joy on September 13th via Rounder Records. Included on the record will be renditions of Los Lobos’s “Angel Dance”, Low’s “Silver Rider” and “Monkey”, Townes Van Zandt’s “Harms Swift Way”, and The Kelly Brothers’ “Falling In Love Again”. Check out the album’s tracklist and the band’s tour dates below.
So the question now becomes: at what point do we stop considering a Led Zeppelin reunion event a remote possibility?
