If you’re Paul McCartney, you’re riding high right now. OK, you’re usually doing pretty awesome, but after being congressionally labeled an American pop icon and setting an awesome summer tour schedule, you’ve got to be especially stoked. Not so fast, Mr. Most Adorable Beatle, because this is the time when the detractors are at their most diabolical. This time around, though, they’re about to open up some very old wounds.
Paul McCartney Really Is Dead: The Last Testament of George Harrison, released by MVD Visual, supposedly offers up new evidence that the rumor of McCartney’s 1966 death and subsequent replacement with a double is, in fact, true. In case you’re unaware, that’s the same hoax that claims John Lennon was so guilt-ridden over duping Beatles fans that he placed hints and revelations in backwards messages and in album artwork. MVD has taken it one step further and exposed the greater truth behind the plot.
“In the summer of 2005, a package arrived at the Hollywood offices of Highway 61 Entertainment from London with no return address. Inside were two mini-cassette audio tapes dated December 30, 1999 and labeled THE LAST TESTAMENT OF GEORGE HARRISON. A voice identical to Harrison tells a shocking story: Paul McCartney was killed in a car crash in November of 1966 and replaced with a double! British intelligence, MI5, had forced the Beatles to cover up McCartney’s death to prevent mass suicides of Beatle fans.”
Awful thing to say, right? At its worst, though, it’s rather laughable. This next part? Not so much.
“However, in this film, George Harrison reveals a secret Beatles history, chronicling McCartney’s fatal accident, the cover up, dozens of unknown clues, and a dangerous cat and mouse game with ‘Maxwell,’ the Beatles’ MI5 handler, as John Lennon became increasingly reckless with the secret. Harrison also insists that Lennon was assassinated in 1980 after he threatened to finally expose ‘Paul McCartney’ as an imposter!”
Words. They do not do this justice. If you’re a glutton for punishment, you can watch the film’s trailer at the official site (via Beat Crave). Or, use your time more efficiently and go buy some tickets for McCartney’s jam-packed summer tour. Before the Flying Spaghetti Monster buys them all up, that is.
