Around this time last year, we were all enjoying new albums from Phoenix, Passion Pit, Dirty Projectors, and Grizzly Bear, paving the way for good spirited, if slightly effeminate, summer. A year later, our summer is looking to be much of the same, as all are still going strong and making sure every single one of you sees them live at some point (somehow, Dirty Projectors are the only one of these I have ever seen. Weird.) Take Phoenix, which could have sworn was playing every festival imaginable last year, yet somehow seems to be playing every festival again this year. I guess this is what happens when music of the underground becomes mainstream, with the major drawback being that we have to wait that much longer for new music from these talented groups.
So Phoenix flies on, booked straight through til the fall, hopefully taking notes for their next record. My fellow Californians will have plenty of venues to choose from, and our Winston Robbins will get a special stop up there in Salt Lake City, which is typical because it usually takes bands a year to get around to playing The Beehive State. But the highlights of the tour (not counting festivals) will be a stop in Mexico City and a sure to be amazing evening at the Hollywood Bowl with the aforementioned Grizzly Bear and SF’s finest, Girls, taking part as the openers. No stop in Phoenix though. Probably gets too confusing.
Oh yeah, they aren’t citizens. Good call boys, avoid at all costs.
