The avant-folk label Paw Tracks doles out giant bear hugs to bands like Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Ariel Pink, Black Dice, and other up-and-coming folk and electronic artists who have at least one paw dipped in freak-folk and another dipped in reverberating psychosis. Enter Prince Rama, a Brooklyn-based trio via Boston art school and a Hare Krishna commune in Florida where Taraka Larson, Nimai Larson, and Michael Collins first met in 2007.
For their latest album, Shadow Temple, Prince Rama sought the help of Dave Portner (Avey Tare) and Josh Dibb (Deakin) of Animal Collective to produce and guest on the album. The band recorded alternately in Kurt Vonnegut’s grandson’s cabin and a 135-year-old haunted church, causing the sound of Shadow Temple to read as if it truly has become unstuck in time. The band says the album draws on ”Asian rituals, krautrock legacies, chopped and screwed homages, hallucinatory operas, and dance hall psychedelia,” familiar territory for Tare and Deakin. Check out the tracklist below.
Prince Rama has some scattered dates throughout the summer, also listed below.
