The Black Angels record Phosphene Dream

What is one surefire way to quickly, and significantly, expand a fanbase? Land a release on a high-profile summer blockbuster. And in 2010, that happens to be the indie-laden soundtrack for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. For the Austin-based neo-psychedelic outfit, The Black Angles, the opportunity to once again work with UNKLE and transmit “With You in My Head” via the soundtrack was impossible to resist, even though many fans now scream “Sell-out” on their MySpace message board.

Undeniably, 2010 has been quite a transitional year for The Black Angels. Recently, the five-piece relocated to LA in order to record its upcoming release, Phosphene Dream. Produced and mixed by Dave Sardy (Oasis, Wolfmother, Black Mountain), the album will be the debut from the newly relaunched Blue Horizon Records. Modernized by Richard Gottehrer and Seymour Stein (co-founders of Sire records), Blue Horizon’s new mission is to “serve as a source of music from emerging artists across genres.” The duo have previously helped develop a few acts you might’ve heard of, including Madonna, Talking Heads, Blondie, The Go-Go’s, Depeche Mode, and The Pretenders.

Phosphene Dream is currently set for release on September 14th in the US and September 13th in the U.K. Gottehrer’s independent music and video distribution company, Orchard, will handle the marketing and worldwide digital distribution. The first single, “Bad Vibrations”, can be downloaded for free at the band’s website.

The Black Angels will begin performing the new material across Europe mid-August, returning to the states for ATP New York, on September 5th. No other dates have currently been announced, but expect a tour to help promote the album. A complete tracklisting has yet to be released, but take a look at those tour dates below.
