The Budos Band, the self-described “Afro-funk” collective from Staten Island, has an album coming out — and as anyone who’s heard of the group knows, the surrounding tour will be something to witness. The 10-piece collective will tour almost incessantly between the end of June and the beginning of September, with all dates spanning North America.
The Budos Band will kick off its travels this weekend with a four-date western Canadian Jazz festival stand. July has the band traveling across the Midwest, back up to Canada, and over to the northeastern U.S. The Budos Band will save the West Coast for August, stopping at Outside Lands and all over Southern California. After sampling Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and every other Western state imaginable besides Montana, the band closes its tour in the Pacific Northwest in early September. The final date is September 4th at Bumbershoot.
The new album, The Budos Band III, comes out August 10th on Daptone Records. As one might guess, it’s the collective’s third LP. What one might not guess is the album was recorded over a timeframe of just 48 hours in January. Budos Band baritone sax player Jared Tankel, the “de facto frontman”, said of the album, “Heading into the studio for Budos III, I really thought we were going to make the first psychedelic, doom-rock record ever recorded at Daptone.” He continued, “…somehow it ended up sounding like a Budos record.” What goes into a Budos record? You can expect horns, cowbells, breakbeats, congas, and of course, baritone saxophone, along with traditional rock instrumentation.
