Update: Check out the album art to your right. Also, TwentyFourBit has a list of working titles.
It seems like every time we blink, another one of our “35 More Albums to Buy in 2010” is being further detailed. Case in point The Walkmen‘s forthcoming fifth studio album.
The Brooklyn outfit will release the newly titled Lisbon on September 14th via Fat Possum. Per Pitchfork, the 11-track album was recorded in warehouses in Brooklyn and Philadelphia, partially written on trips to the Portuguese city that gave the album its title, produced by John Congleton (St. Vincent, The Thermals), and engineered by Passion Pit/Les Savy Fav collaborator Chris Zane.
Speaking with Pitchfork back in February, frontman Hamilton Leithauser noted the group used one of music’s biggest figures as inspiration for the record.
“There is a lot of stuff that’s Elvis-sounding, like early Elvis and Sun Records kind of sounds. We have just so many eight-tracks over the last year; the list is just unbelievable,” Leithauser explained. The instrumentation is very simple, and then there’s a very loud vocal and a softish drum. There is a slapback guitar on everything. I don’t know if it will end up being used at all, but I think that was a starting point for a lot of stuff that Paul looped with the guitar.”
He went on to caution, however, that the record’s final product might not necessarily fit his aforementioned description: “…With the end product, it will sound crazy that we even talk about that. It won’t even sound like that at all, but that’s definitely where it started.”
We’ll find out exactly what all that means starting August 14th. In the meantime, The Walkmen have mapped out a healthy amount of tour dates this summer, including appearances at Osheaga and Lollapalooza and a UK leg with The Black Keys.
