Training Day director attached to Tupac biopic

Between his days as a gangbanging youth, his run-ins with the law, and his overall charismatic persona, there’s little doubt that Tupac Shakur‘s life story is rife with cinematic exploits. So it shouldn’t be much of a surprise to learn a Tupac biopic has been announced.

While there aren’t many details available yet, the film should be authentic in its grit, thanks to director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Brooklyn’s Finest).

In an interview with XXL, Fuqua said that he’d be starting the film in September after having the project greenlighted by the Morgan Creek production company. As to who will step into the shoes of the West Coast rapper,  Fuqua said he hopes to go a route similar to the Notorious B.I.G. biopic and spotlight some up and comers.

“That’s the goal, I want to discover someone new,” Fuqua said. “I want to discover a lot of new people if I can. Obviously I’m going to have to put some people in it that you know, just because actors have different skills. I want to go to the streets and find him anywhere he might be in the world.”

Stay tuned for more details as they’re announced. Also, if you’re in Atlanta, GA on June 16th, make sure to visit the 2nd Annual Birthday Concert Celebration at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts. The concert, which features performances by Rick Ross and Bun B, will celebrate the deceased rapper’s 39th birthday. And don’t forget about the Death Row reissues just in time for Christmas. A thug life, indeed.
