Check Out: New Smashing Pumpkins' song, "Freak"

Coming off of a successful warm-up show at Los Angeles’ Viper Room, the Smashing Pumpkins have released a celabratory new song – “Freak”. The cut is the fifth track from the band’s sprawling, 11-EP project, Teargarden by Kaleidoscope, which basically sees Billy Corgan releasing 44 songs one by one (for free) via the band’s official website.

While some argue that Corgan should drop the band’s name and start anew, “Freak” doesn’t sound like he’s ready to let go of control, or the notoriety of being a Pumpkin. In fact, it sounds like Billy boy is simply trying to bring the memories with him into the 21st century. The nearly four-minute piece looks to feature tight guitar work by the band’s latest axe man — Jeff Schroeder — and sports a heavy 90s vibe. What’s more, “Freak” is welcome confirmation that Commander Corgan has his new little soldiers following his every order and makes the future actually look pretty good for the group. No one is dissenting, and Corgan actually sounds happy despite lyrics like “Life is not a dream if you can’t wake up from the dream you wanted.”

The band is currently getting along while they tour small clubs, and they’ve already sold out several venues (including New York’s Terminal 5 and Ft. Lauderdale’s Revolution), so hurry up and get your tickets via Ticketmaster.com. Just don’t heckle Billy during the encore.
