Ex-Matches guitarist to release EP with new band

When Oakland’s The Matches split last summer after nine years together, a piece of the Bay Area music scene and pop-punk in general died as well. But lead guitarist Jonathan Devoto immediately pressed on with his new powerpop group Bird by Bird, which went on its first tour in March, a trek that included a stop at South by Southwest. This summer, Bird by Bird releases its debut EP Albatross digitally through its blog and other online stores.

Devoto still plays guitar but also takes over frontman duties for Bird by Bird and co-writes all songs. Five of those songs will appear on Albatross, which hits the Web August 24th. Confirmed tracks include album opener “Delirious” and “Where Did You Go?”, the latter of which you can stream below.

The band will be touring this fall in support of Albatross; dates yet to come.
