Last month we reported the surprising-is-putting-it-mildly news that post-punk pioneers Swans have recorded their first album in 13 years. Vague release plans can change though [insert obligatory Detox mention], so we tried not to get our hopes too high. Well, now the disc has a release date and track list. Get those expectations soaring! UPDATE: It has album art too, for all you astronomy geeks out there.
The awesomely-titled My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky features eight new ones from master songwriter Michael Gira, including the super-awesomely-titled You Fucking People Make Me Sick.” This track features both Devendra Banhart and Giras three-year old daughter Saoirse, who we really hope says the track name at least once. Sounds from some other infant began the band’s 1991 release White Light from the Mouth of Infinity, so there seems to be a baby trend. Can Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of Swans be far behind?
Other guests on the latest include ex-Swan drummer Bill Rieflin and Mercury Rev’s Grasshopper, who apparently plays a swarm of mandolins (via Pitchfork). The album drops September 21st on Giras own Young God Records, a week before the band embarks on tour. While you count down the days, preview seven of the eight tracks in live takes from a limited-edition release last year.
