The Pop Group was one of many bands that exploded onto the scene in the punk/post-punk wave of the late 1970s in England. They broke up in 1981 due to internal disagreements and it looked like only their influence would remain. Until now, that is. The group recently announced they’ll be playing four small club dates in September in Europe to “blow the dust off the old songs and pick up where we left off.
For those of you in the dark, The Pop Group formed in Bristol in 1978. Though their career was short, they did release two albums, the critically acclaimed Y and For How Much Longer Must We Tolerate Mass Murder. While both these albums were brimming with anger, the band certainly hasn’t mellowed in its old age. A released statement about the reunion said, “There was a lot left undone,….we were so young and volatile….Let’s face it, things are probably even MORE fucked now than they were in the early 80’s…..and WE are even more fucked off!”
The 2010 line-up will feature all the band’s original members: Mark Stewart (Vocals), Gareth Sager (Guitar, Keys, Sax), Bruce Smith (Drums), Dan Catsis (Bass). The four dates can be found below. But if you can’t make it to these small shows, never fear. The Pop Group has also gotten a number of invites to headline various music festivals in 2011.
