If you weren’t up extra late last night, then you probably missed indie-idols She & Him performing “Don’t Look Back” from Volume 2, on CBS’s Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Still, don’t worry because what’s great about this day in age is that nothing really happened unless it ends up on YouTube, and we have the video to prove it.
A talking giraffe introduced the duo and what played out onscreen was equally lighthearted and enjoyable. You see, the great thing about M.Ward and Zooey Deschanel’s four-year-old pet project is how non-committal and carefree the tunes are, and last night’s performance was no exception.
While she looked a bit stiff leading a six-piece band (complete with color-coordinated back up singers), the 30-year-old Deschanel still appeared more comfortable than she has ever been. The singer, who has garnered a reputation for being uncomfortable in front of cameras, cracked a few smiles and seemed pleased with her relatively strong vocal performance. She even threw in some dainty piano trills before Ward ever-so-smoothly put his signature guitar passage on the song. With everything going on onstage, it’s amazing how easy it is to forget that Ward – one of our generation’s finest songwriters – is quietly leading the whole thing from stage right. In the end, it seems like Deschanel has completely put her previous late night mishaps behind her, and a tambourine-tapping good time was had by all.
