Yo La Tengo, Jon Spencer scheduled for Alex Chilton memorial concert

In the last four months alone, Big Star has lost two of its original members. Just in time for this year’s SXSW, frontman Alex Chilton died of a heart attack. Then, just days ago, original bassist Andy Hummel succumbed to cancer. With legions of fans and countless musicians having been inspired by the work of the two men and their legendary indie band, New York-based City Winery is holding a special concert in honor of their legacy.

According to L Magazine‘s The Measure, the celebration (which will be the second for Chilton’s music) is being called “Channeling Chilton: A Night of Alex Chilton’s Music” and will go down July 28th. Acts already scheduled to appear for the event include Yo La Tengo, Marshall Crenshaw, Jon Spencer, Evan Dando, and many more artists still to be confirmed. Proceeds from the event will benefit those individuals and organizations impacted by the Deepwater Horizon Disaster through the Gulf Restoration Network.

You can buy your tickets here. As always, stay tuned for more details as they’re announced.
