This fall, fans around the nation will have the opportunity to secure two new international pandas. But don’t stock up on bamboo quite yet; these aren’t of the furry Chinese variety.
On October 12th, both the UK’s Gold Panda and Edmonton’s Hot Panda will be releasing their newest efforts in the States. While both bands seem to have a fondness for the lovable bear, they couldn’t have more divergent aural aesthetics. Gold Panda’s Lucky Shiner (Ghostly International) contains 13 tracks of effervescent, beat-driven electronic music, with an unmistakable Asian influence. (He studied for two years at Japan’s School of Oriental and Asian studies.) Check out the first single, “Snow and Taxis”, below.
Hot Panda’s sophomore LP, How Come I’m Dead? (Mint Records), is the result of a week of spontaneity, quirkiness, and experimentation. According to the band, the album contains everything from circus freak dance numbers to heartbreaking country ballads with screeching metal guitar solos. And they are giving us a little taste with the organ-infused first single, “Mindlessnesslessness”. Maybe it’s these varying tastes in music that inhibit wild pandas from becoming too familiar; I know I have skipped out on more than one suitor for their boyband passions.
