On top of being wildly popular, Bruce Springsteen must have an extra special emotional bond with The Darkness on the Edge of Town, his seminal fourth album from 1978. Either that or a 32 year anniversary warrants a massive reissue.
In addition to plans for new vocal overdub, 10 new outtakes, and a bonus DVD, The Boss will soon share a new documentary that chronicles the recording of the classic album. And much like The White Stripes recent motion picture offering, our friends up north will get first dubs. According to IndieWire.com (via RollingStone.com), Springsteen will debut The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town on September 14th at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Directed by Thom Zimmy, who has worked with Springsteen in the past on other video/film projects, the film will utilize “a treasure trove of footage from the 1970s”, according to Thom Powers, the festival’s doc programmer. Powers also said the documentary plays out almost like an actual film, where the audience can “see all the twists and turns of the making of this album.” And if you’re a big Springsteen fan and feel shocked by the news, Powers claims the whole project has been under wraps for some two years. That’s why he’s The Boss.
