Now that Squarepusher has impressed us all with his recent solo bass effort, the English born IDM extraordinaire will continue doing what he does best — merge haunting DnB melodies with jazz-influenced bass riffs and top it all off with some electro-clash madness. But for his newest release, a single titled “Cryptic Motion”, the long-time Warp artist is collaborating with Pedro Winter (Busy P) and his Ed Banger label.
The pairing may seem a bit odd, given Ed Banger’s current stable of Justice, SebastiAn, and Mr. Oizo, but in a recent interview with In the Mix, Winter spoke of his intentions to bring actual “dance music” back to the label, and move away the bangers of Justice and the current dance-punk vibe being crafted by acts like The Bloody Beetroots. Squarepusher must have been given the memo, as “Cryptic Motion” does shy away from the more aggressive beats that he often produces.
That said, don’t get too used to it. Choosing to release the track under the slightly altered moniker Squarepusher presents Shobaleader One, “Cryptic Motion” may prove to be the only release between Squarepusher and Ed Banger. According to Winter, in an email to the Daily Swarm, “[Squarepusher] will always be a WARP artist. I am really proud of this collab with Warp they came to me with this record and I am more than happy to release it on Ed. I like adventures and i hope well surprise people with this one!”
