Supergroups have a dubious place in music’s history. There are certainly several awesome ones like Traveling Wilburys, Broken Social Scene, Cream, arguably Oysterhead. There are also several not-so-awesome ones, like Don Dokken, Damn Yankees, Asia, arguably Bad Company. I’m leaving out many, I know, but my point is this: it’s time to call another supergroup to the witness stand. Which category should they fall into?
Fistful Of Mercy is comprised of George Harrison’s son Dhani Harrison and singer-songwriters Joseph Arthur and Ben Harper, and tonight they will make their first public appearance at 7:30 p.m. at Easy Street Records in West Seattle, WA. To those of us who are geographically inhibited, we can tune in at 2 p.m. EST to catch Fisful Of Mercy on KCRW, Los Angeles (via TwentyFourBit).
A first listen of the trio can be heard below. The currently untitled but suggestively eponymous track aches and swells with forthright lyricism as the three men sing with clenched fists, eyes, and hearts. “We have a way of saving our own lives” the boys repeat, couched in three-part harmonies–a true supergroup staple.
When will they release a proper album? Are there any further shows planned? What do they think of Mike and the Mechanics? The answers are pending, but tune in to KCRW tomorrow as they would be damn fools to not to ask questions like these, would they not?
