Yes, it’s true. A mere three months and change from the release of the critically acclaimed Cosmogramma, Flying Lotus, aka Steven Ellison, has announced plans for a new EP. Titled Pattern+Grid World, the effort will feature a full seven new tracks, and will drop via Warp Records on September 21st. It also comes with a free poster by Theo Ellsworth, an image which is appropriately vision-through-noise. The detail of the poster forms the EP’s cover art.
Like Cosmogramma before it, Pattern+Grid World promises to be a mix of genres and influences, remaining almost possible to define in one sentence. Vocoder and synths are featured on opener “Clay”, “Time Vampires” is likened to a sound “somwhere between DJ Premier and Lee Hazelwood”, and “Kill Your Co-Workers” is “schizophrenic ping-ponging electro.” Grime, drum and bass and home made beats are also said to be included, providing the convergence of influences and sounds prevalent in FlyLo’s full length debut.
According to Warp, “when Flying Lotus records hit their stride, all buttons labeled “pause” and “stop” disappear, and this one is no different”. You can judge this for yourself on one of the new tracks, “Camera Day”, which is available to stream below.
Keeping the momentum going in 2010, Ellison has a few festivals dates planned around North America and Europe, with some solo shows in there as well. Check out the touring schedule after the stream.
