We reported earlier this year that Arcade Fire and Spike Jonze have been collaborating on a short film. New details have been released, namely, the genre: it’s to be a science fiction B-movie companion piece to The Suburbs.
Front man Win Butler told Pitchfork in a new interview that after playing some of the music from the album to Jonze, the director’s initial mental impressions matched Butler’s own feelings in regards to a science fiction film he had seen in his younger days. With that, the two worked with the younger Butler, William, to write the film.
The piece, with a working title of Scenes from the Suburb, already wrapped up filming back in April. Shot in Austin, the cast involved a lot of children; Butler seems to have had fun with that, saying that it was “cool to revert to being a 15-year-old for a little while.” There’s no word yet on a release date or the length of the film.
In the meantime, there’s plenty of other new Arcade Fire news to divert your attention.
