On paper, Joanna Newsom and Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold dueting on a Sheryl Crow/Kid Rock number seems truly bizarre. Before you file this under “Hipster Irony” though, take a listen to their version of country radio hit “Picture.” Apparently these two free spirits know something we don’t, because this Nashville nugget sounds totally natural for them, like an old Patsy Cline number. With syncopated backing vocals and a sick guitar solo, its origins are beside the point.
The duo busted this out in Oakland last night and, with a few dates left on their tour, there’s hope it will reappear. If it does, maybe someone can capture a better video? The zoom button’s there for a reason!
Update: Speaking of said tour, Newsom has just confirmed a November 23rd performance at Carnegie Hall in New York. Tickets go on sale Monday, August 9th. She’ll also be appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday, August 11th. Complete list of confirmed tour dates below.
