While were a bit perturbed that a new My Morning Jacket album isnt likely until May 2011, the band did leave us with a little morsel of sonic goodness to whet our appetites while we wait. The encore for last Wednesdays show at San Diego States Outdoor Theater featured a brand new song that may, or may not, be on the next record.
The cut, which is tentatively being called Circuital on the interwebs, is a stripped down, introspective tune that finds Jim James singing going nowhere/ quickly/ Im older still going back to my childhood ways before the song swells from simple bass plucking into an anthemic blend of classic rock and modern day alt-country. MMJ actually trade the electronic impulses and falsetto vocal flourishes that marked tracks like Touch Me Im Going to Scream Pt. 2 from Evil Urges for strummed guitar and vocals more akin to those on Gideon from their 2005 album Z.
Well keep you updated on any more developments, but check out the band performing the song below and see if they throw out anymore surprises on one of the tour dates below. Theyve also scheduled a five-night stand at New York Citys Terminal 5 where theyll perform each one of their studio albums in their entirety on consecutive nights. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster.com
