When you take the recent announcement that Incubus will be headlining San Bernardino’s Smoke Out in October and add it to singer Brandon Boyd’s July announcement that the quartet will soon be visiting the studio, it seems like a guarantee that 2011 will shape up to be a busy year for the alt-rockers. So it’s good to know that the members have kept sharp; Boyd released his solo debut this summer, and bassist Ben Kenney will deliver his fourth LP this fall.
Best known for his role on bass, plus earlier guitar duties for The Roots, Kenney is a true multi-instrumentalist. For Burn the Tapes, not only did Kenney lay down the guitar and bass tracks, but he also drummed, sang, and served as producer and engineer. The release showcases Kenney’s diverse musical aptitude, but once he begins to sing, the Incubus comparisons are hard to stifle. Check out “Worlds Collide” in video form and the LP’s tracklist below.
Burn the Tapes will be released October 1st on iTunes via his own label, Ghetto Crush Industries. A DVD featuring skits, questions from fans, and live performances with his touring band members, Ashley Mendel and Sekou Lumumba, will accompany the release. And 500 fans will have the chance to score a limited edition CD/DVD combo signed by Ben Kenney.
