U2 remastering Achtung Baby?

Back in August, we reported that U2 had four albums on the way. Well, make that five. Maybe even six.

Doing some unrelated studio work yesterday, John Vanderslice reported (via slicing up eyeballs) that the band was remastering Achtung Baby one room over. “I’m mastering the new JV/Magik*Magik Orchestra record with Bernie Grundman in LA,” he tweeted. “They’re remastering Achtung Baby in next room!!”

This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to fans. Over the past three years, the band has been trekking through its back catalog, remastering the classics one by one. Under the Edge’s direction, the band has remastered/reissued every disc up to Achtung (save Rattle and Hum, which hardly counts), complete with bonus material and elaborate packaging. In 2007, The Joshua Tree got the “20th Anniversary” treatment. Odds are Achtung, originally released in 1991, garners the same tagline for a 2011 release.

No word yet on bonus discs, DVDs, etc. Until we hear more, watch this live version of “Mysterious Ways” from the Zoo TV tour. That belly dancer should remind you why these shows received mixed reviews.
