Watch: Neil Young lives in an “Angry World” for new song

We’ve said that Neil Young likes to stay busy. Between touring, his upcoming Bridge School Benefit and consequent reunion of Buffalo Springfield, and his eagerly anticipated new solo album Le Noise, the 64-year-old legend can’t keep still. Part of that energy has to come from the fact that, despite his age and his status as an icon, Young is still an angry dude with a lot to prove. “Angry World”, which happens to be our first taste off Le Noise, isn’t just another single and a video; it’s anthem for the man Young still is.

Despite the menacing buzz and crackle of the extremely electric  track, it’s the kind of well-informed and almost patient anger that develops from years of hard work and a dedication to the continued onslaught of stuff you simply will never completely fix in life.

The vocals in particular seem especially pained from a guy known for some particularly powerful songs (“Philadelphia”, anyone?), but they come alive with tweaks and effects. Visually, the clip’s a mish-mash of images, all in stark black and white. From shots of Young performing to crazy belly dancers, the message is clear: this planet is messed up, man.
