There’s something about the super sweet melodies and boy-ish ache of Lightspeed Champion that makes the music of Dev Hynes feel like it could be right at home back in the ’60s. Now, with a new EP planned (via CLASH), Hynes’ connection to pop’s heyday will grow even stronger — after all, he’ll be teaming up with composer Van Dyke Parks, the man known for working with Brian Wilson on the shelved Beach Boys album Smile.
Bye Bye will feature four songs the pair worked on, including a cover of the Beach Boy’s “Till I Die”, plus a re-worked track (“There’s Nothing Underwater” is now “Underwater There Is Nothing”) from this year’s Life If Sweet! Nice To Meet You. Parks, who has also worked with The Byrds and Joanna Newsom, is somewhat of a hero to Hynes, who often found himself almost lost in the whole process, saying, “I found myself listening to the stems and works in progress as a fan of him, then I’d remember that it’s something we’re working on together… then I’d freak out… Then I’d have a drink and I’d feel fine.” We’re sure that’s how all great collaborations work themselves out.
The EP, which will be available as a 7″ and a digital download, hits UK outlets on December 13th.
