Peaches brings “Peaches Christ Superstar” to North America this winter

Okay, so we know that musicals aren’t generally seen as “cool”. Even with rock coming to the Great White Way in shows like Rock of Ages and Green Day’s American Idiot, we’re willing to bet that not a lot of you have seen a lot of shows. The $122 asking price for tickets in most venues also probably adds to that… grumble, grumble. But here’s something even the poor hipsters can get behind:

If you are at least a little well versed in the world of musicals, you might have heard of the show Jesus Christ Superstar (composed by Andrew Llyod Webber, known for other musicals such as Phantom of the Opera, Evita, and the abomination known as Cats). It’s had many incarnations and runs over its four decade existence, but it’s receiving a very special treatment courtesy of Canadian-born artist Peaches.

As Spinner reports, the singer and performance artist, well known for her sexually explicit lyrics and albums with titles such as Fatherfucker and Impeach My Bush, has created a one-woman show version of the musical. Appropriately titled “Peaches Christ Superstar”, Peaches takes on the roles of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and the disciples. It isn’t her show’s premiere — she performed it in Berlin late March this year after only a little scuffling over music rights — but it’ll be making its stateside debut here in December in a handful of North American cities.

Peaches has certainly been busy lately, between acting in a movie, making an appearance on a Christina Aguilera album, and more, but this is quite the undertaking. The six-city trek will launch in Boston on December 10th and will then feature stops in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco before concluding in Toronto on December 21st.

Even if you’re not a huge fan of musicals, we’d highly suggest checking this out if you can just to see her performance. As a musical dork myself, I will tell you this about Jesus Christ Superstar: it takes Broadway and the New Testament and combines it into pure badassery. Seriously, trust me on it. Peaches is bound to take it to a whole new level.
